HOT AND SWEET tells the story of the Honeytones, an all-girl band in Chicago, 1945. The musical follows these pioneering musicians as they try to make it to the top in the final year of World War II. Passionate about their music, they are willing to risk everything in order to play. This is their only chance, since their competition is serving overseas and will be coming home when the war ends. |
At the musical's core is the artistic conflict between Blossom, the Honeytones' creator, and Adele, its gifted music director. Blossom, eager to reinvent herself as the refined lead singer of a pristine all-girl band, is hell bent on presenting an old-fashioned, sweet sound. She inevitably locks horns with Adele, who is equally determined to create a fresher sound with a hot, swing style. |
Ultimately, though, the musical is a vibrant ensemble piece, interweaving the moving stories of all these gifted and beautiful "Rosie the Riveters with rhythm"...their dreams, their loves, their struggles, and their bittersweet triumphs. |
The musical brings to life a unique and dramatic era. Its melodic jazz/swing based score and its multi-layered story line about these remarkable women, give an emotional dimension and meaning to this extraordinary time. Yet it is the universal themes of desire, despair, and transcending hope that make the story timeless. In the end, Hot and Sweet is an uplifting celebration of human potential. |
